Mount Zion Cemetery was one of few burial grounds for the Jefferson County African American community about 1885 through 1973.
The repair and cleanup of the cemetery is also including the reconstruction of a new burial surname list, the original has never been located.

The Mt. Zion Cemetery Board
The Mt. Zion Cemetery Board was formed for the purpose of restoring, maintaining, and preserving, primarily, the Mt. Zion Cemetery. The board is made up of local residents who have volunteered; many have family members buried here, many do not, but all for the purpose of saving one of the many local sites needing care.
Meetings are held during the year as needed, normally on the first Wednesday of the month during the evening. The Board members welcome the public to join the meetings. Please contact us for location and directions; schedule of meetings will be posted here and if possible in the Jefferson County Leader Newspaper under the Calender section.
Volunteer & Donation Efforts
Volunteers are always needed and appreciated. Please contact us to help in the preservation or to make a donation to the adopt-a-stone project. Dates will be listed for ongoing cleanup days and other events planned.
Cleanup days, if scheduled, will be on the 2nd or 4th weekend of the month; weather permitting. Please call in advance. Schedule of cleanups will be posted in the Jefferson County Leader Newspaper under the Calender section.
We would like to thank all of our supporters for volunteering their time & donations!
