Before & After the restoration of Mount Zion Cemetery

Mount Zion Cemetery was one of few burial grounds for the Jefferson County African American community about 1885 through 1973.
My goals for the repair and cleanup of the cemetery began with the reconstruction of a burial surname list, the original has never been located. The research is ongoing.

Feel free to contact me regarding cemetery burials or to add your family's information to the database.

The Mt. Zion Cemetery Board
My family's project in sprucing up the cemetery after the Flood of 1993 developed into a community pride project.
The project enlisted the assistance of local residents, businesses, and additional area volunteers to restore Mount Zion Cemetery.
To ensure the project's longevity in the community and assist in its maintainance and preservation, I formed and established the group as a
501c(3) not-for-profit organization named The Mt. Zion Cemetery Board.
Many of the volunteers have family members buried here, many do not, but all came together for the purpose of saving one of the many local sites needing care.

I am so proud of this cemetery project, the volunteers, donators, and my ancestors who reside there.
The project inspires me to continue on my path to pass history onto the next generation.

Off to return another significant piece of our history back into mainstream!
